Astonishing ACKS – Türas, Thunderer of the Gods

(Two players in my kickoff session chose Clerics of Türas as PCs – and both survived (although one was maimed). Check out my previous post on Auran gods; here are house rules for the gritty Hyperborean reboot of Thor.)

Hammer of TürasThis deity of Neutrality (Lawful tendencies) is associated with storms, thunder, and war. Türas is a ruthless foe of otherworldly creatures. (It is said that in Old Earth, he hunted giants instead.)

The strength of Türas is legendary. His followers continually strive to improve their skills and do great deeds. They believe that to die in battle is the only way to die properly.

Devotion to Türas is strongly discouraged in Vikland, though he is popular with Skandiks elsewhere in Hyperborea.

Cleric of Türas

Clerics of Türas follow my standard rules for the class (including the Divine 2 spell progression), modified as follows:

Requirements: WIS & STR 9 or more.
Custom Weapon Selection: Axes, swords/daggers, club, spear, warhammer.
Broad Armour Selection: Chain armour or lighter (including shields).
Two Fighting Styles: Weapon & shield, two-handed weapons.

Granted Powers: Clerics of Türas cannot Turn Undead. Instead, they are granted powers to Inspire Allies and combat Otherworldly Enemies:

Inspire Allies: Inspiring courage requires a few moments of oration before a battle (one round), and grants the cleric’s allies within a 50′ radius a +1 bonus to attack throws, damage rolls, morale rolls (for monsters or NPCs allied with the cleric), and saving throws against magical fear. The bonus lasts for 10 minutes (1 turn).

Otherworldly Enemies: Türas is said to strive against eldritch horrors. The cleric receives +1 on attack throws against aboleths, crab-men, elder things, fish-men, the Great Race, mi-go, night-gaunts, spore-men, and tentacular horrors. At level 7, this bonus increases to +2, and at level 13 it increases to +3.

Türas Spell List

Clerics of Türas use the following modified spell list (adapted from Rachel Bonuses):

Türas Spell List

The base number of spells in a divine caster’s repertoire is equal to the number of spells he can cast per day at each spell level, modified by the caster’s Wisdom bonus. A divine caster can change his spell repertoire (for free) when he prays each day, swapping for other selections from his class list.

Just a note on this class build – I swapped out “Unrestricted” armour selection to “Broad”. As per the Player’s Companion guidelines, this isn’t enough to go to “Broad” weapon selection so I added a third choice to the “Narrow” weapon options instead.

  2. K-Slacker says:

I’ve prepared two templates for Clerics of Türas, though other options are possible:

    Runeseer of Türas

    Proficiencies: Prophesy, Craft (rune-carving).
Equipment: War hammer, chain mail armour, wooden shield, carved stone holy symbol (hammer of Türas), stone-grey wool tunic and pants, leather belt, low boots, backpack, craftsman’s tools, 2 week’s iron rations, 1gp.

    Purifier of Türas

    Proficiencies: Sensing Evil, Intimidation.
Equipment: War hammer, chain mail armour, steel shield, Holy symbol (hammer of Türas), blue wool tunic and pants, , leather belt, low boots, backpack, 2 flasks of holy water, 12 torches, tinder box, 50′ rope, 1 week’s iron rations, 5gp.

  3. K-Slacker says:

If I swapped out the Granted Powers and a handful of spells, this cleric variant would work for Ymir and Ullr too.
